Are Your Images Optimized for SEO?
Posted by Jake Cohen

Images are a great way in creating engaging content. Your web leads have short attention spans and no one wants to view a page with a wall of text.
Photos, illustrations and other images are a key way to add to your text and create better looking pages. It might be a good idea to have guidelines for you pages, for example, have a two image minimum for a page or blog would be a good rule to increase images.

Along with the look of your website, it is important to make sure that they are optimized as well.

Image Relevance

Making your pages engaging and easy to read is a key part of the web visitors experience. Choosing the right image for your page can be almost as important as how you optimize it for SEO. It’s also important for you to place images on your page that are relevant to the text around it.

File Names
After you’ve found your ideal image for the page, next you need to optimize it with the right file name. This helps provide a benefit to your page’s SEO, and helps in ranking. Never use the default image file name, like, “AAAAAA009.png” Many content management systems use the file name to create the image.

Title and Alt Tags
Image titles and alternative attributes (commonly called alt attributes, alt tags or alt text) are attributes that go in the image tag. Use image alt attributes to provide more detail about your images that you weren’t able to include in the filename. Make sure your alt attribute accurately describes the image and includes your target keyword, ideally in ten words or so.

Image Size
Page speed is an important part of optimizing your site. You don’t want, user waiting for a page to load. Maximize your page speed by scaling down images to a small file. If you are using Photoshop, for save options make sure to save for the web.

Image optimization has great benefits for your on page SEO: Increasing user engagement, decreasing bounce rate and consistent use of keywords throughout the page. The easiest way to determine whether you are conducting good SEO is to use a trusted site auditing tool. A comprehensive SEO audit checklist will give you a detailed overview of how your site is performing.
